What do these specs mean?

Understanding Thermal Specs

Thermal Resolution

Think of this like a TV screen (e.g., 1280x1024). A higher number means more pixels. More pixels give you a sharper, more detailed image, allowing you to digitally zoom in much further before the image gets blurry or pixelated.

Thermal Lens

Similar to a camera lens, measured in millimeters (e.g., 50mm). A larger lens gathers more thermal energy and "sees" further, giving you a longer detection range. However, larger lenses typically result in a narrower field of view.

Pixel Interval (Pitch)

The physical distance between pixels on the sensor, measured in microns (e.g., 12µm). A smaller number means the pixels are packed tighter together, which produces a crisper image and extends your optical magnification without needing a massive lens.

NETD (Thermal Sensitivity)

Measures how tiny of a temperature difference the device can detect. Lower is better (e.g., < 15mK beats < 25mK). A lower NETD means you get a much clearer picture in terrible weather (rain, thick fog, high humidity) and superior contrast between the animal and its surroundings.

Thermal FOV (Field of View)

How wide of an area you can see at once. A wider FOV is excellent for scanning large areas quickly to spot movement. A narrower FOV usually means the device has higher magnification, perfect for identifying specific targets at long distances.

Understanding the Math

We believe in honest, real-world field specifications.

Detection ranges are calculated by taking the manufacturer's baseline testing and physically scaling it to the average height of the target animal.

Recognition & Identification are calculated using Johnson's Criteria—the military standard for thermal optics. By analyzing the physical properties of the camera's lens and sensor pitch, we calculate exactly when the target will take up enough pixels on your screen to be clearly identified.

Note: High humidity, thick coats, and environmental background temperatures will reduce these maximum optical distances in the field.
Key Features & Highlights

Rix S6R Key Features:

  • Resolution Enhanced Technology (RET): AI-driven algorithms optimize the 640x512 sensor output, delivering a sharper and more informative image for professional observation.
  • Independent PiP Zoom: The Picture-in-Picture window can be zoomed independently of the main screen. This allows you to maintain situational awareness of the broader environment while simultaneously focusing on a specific area of interest at high magnification.
  • Intuitive "One-Function" OS: Designed for ease of use in dark or low-visibility settings, every button is mapped to a single major function. The on-screen UI illuminates when a button is pressed, providing instant tactile and visual confirmation.
  • Return to Center (RTC): A software-driven alignment feature that ensures your primary point of focus remains centered in the display for a more natural and comfortable viewing experience.
Product Overview

The RIX Storm S6R is the flagship of the Storm series, specifically engineered for professional operators who require maximum detail in a highly portable format. While it maintains the ultra-lightweight 440g chassis of the range, the S6R is powered by a premium 640x512 resolution sensor. This significantly higher pixel density provides exceptional clarity and allows for much finer identification of objects at extended distances compared to standard 384-resolution units.

With a class-leading sensitivity of <20mK NETD and a high-speed 35mm F1.0 germanium lens, the S6R excels at capturing minute temperature variations. This ensures a clear, well-defined thermal image even in challenging South African environmental conditions, such as coastal fog, humidity, or extreme high-ambient temperatures.

Precision Integrated Rangefinding & Advanced Mapping

The S6R features a fully integrated Laser Rangefinder (LRF) that is built seamlessly into the side of the housing, maintaining its streamlined profile. This module provides real-time, accurate distance data up to 1,200m with ±1m precision.

Thanks to the 640-sensor, the 2.0x base magnification offers a significantly wider field of view, making it the ideal tool for wide-area scanning and monitoring. The digital zoom capabilities allow for detailed inspection of points of interest without the immediate pixelation seen in lower-resolution models.
